How We Shot a High-Impact Cinematic Boxing Video at Red X

High-energy visuals don't happen by accident. They are built frame by frame, sound by sound, long before the camera starts rolling.

Recently, we teamed up with elite athlete Adriette Barrett at Red X in Pretoria to create a 60-second, high-impact cinematic fitness and boxing video designed to stop thumbs and command attention.

Here is a look behind the scenes at how we brought this project from initial concept to a final, punchy edit.

1. The Vision & The Pre-Production Phase

Before setting foot in the gym, we knew we wanted something fast-paced, gritty, yet polished. To pull that off in a 60-second window, planning was everything.

  • The Script & Concept: We mapped out the narrative, starting with intense focus and preparation, escalating into explosive combinations and heavy bag work, and finishing with the satisfying aftermath of a relentless session.

  • The Shot List: Every angle was deliberate. We planned a mix of extreme close-ups (sweat, wrapped hands, focused eyes) and dynamic wide shots to capture explosive athleticism and movement.

Why Pre-Production Matters: Precise shot lists allow us to maximise time on location, ensuring the athlete stays in the zone while we capture every critical angle without wasting energy.

2. Lighting & Atmosphere at Red X for a Cinematic Boxing Video

The venue—Red X (Red X Strong / Red X Next Gen) in Pretoria—provided the perfect backdrop: raw, intense, and built for performance. However, turning a working gym into a cinematic set requires tactical lighting.

  • Sculpting the Subject: We used moody, high-contrast directional lighting to accentuate muscle definition and capture the grit of the environment.

  • Atmosphere: Deep shadows paired with sharp highlights brought out the texture of the boxing wraps, the mist in the air (which is a special liquid designed and accepted in Hollywood so it doesnt affect an atheletes lungs), and the intensity of every punch.

3. High-Impact Editing & Sound Design

A great shoot is only half the battle. The true magic happened in post-production.

The Visual Rhythm

We cut the 60 seconds to match the natural breathing and cadence of a fight. Speed ramps, seamless transitions, and frame-accurate cuts gave the video a relentless, heart-pounding flow.

The Soundscape (SFX)

Visuals visually engage, but sound makes you feel it. We layered rich, custom sound design beneath the INSANE music track:

  • The heavy, low-end thud of glove hitting leather.

  • The sharp, metallic whip of jump ropes slicing through the air.

  • Aggressive, synchronized breathwork and ambient gym resonance.
